Brisco Loran has recently been appointed to the Greater
London Authority’s (GLA) framework for Architecture & Urbanism (A+U) as one
of eleven specialist practices selected to offer ‘Small Sites Housing’ design
to councils, housing associations, and public sector organisations across the
city. Selected via a two-stage bid, the framework is set to run for four years.
The practice’s selection was based on its management
practices, financial position, and portfolio of built work, alongside a design
challenge set by the GLA.
Brisco Loran chose to locate its case study project at
Wayford Street in Battersea, Wandsworth. Illustrated here, the scheme replaces
underused garages with an alternating strip of sustainable homes, gardens, and
shared yards, arranged to rhyme with the established green spaces and buildings
of the neighbouring estate.
The homes are designed to be constructed with a plinth of brickwork, salvaged from the site’s disassembled garages, and a layer of rendered shiplapped external insulation, developed to chime with the unusual faux slate elevations of the existing estate.
